What Is an Iconoclast?
An iconoclast is someone who questions expectations and breaks from long-held assumptions. Our students do that every time they write a poem, share their stories, or step onto a stage, proving that every young person’s voice matters. Through creative writing, poetry, and the arts, Iconoclast Artists gives them the skills and the stage to do it.
-
Our Mission
Iconoclast Artists equips middle and high school students with the literacy skills and core competencies they need to succeed academically and personally.
Through instruction in English Language Arts integrated with creative writing and poetry, students strengthen their reading, writing, vocabulary, critical thinking, and communication skills.
-
Our Vision
We envision a future where students realize their potential, communicate with confidence, think creatively and critically, and contribute to their communities.
-
What We Believe
We believe every student has a story worth telling and strengths worth building upon. When young people are listened to and taken seriously as authors, their confidence grows in the classroom and beyond.
As students read, write, discuss, reflect, and revise, they strengthen their literacy skills while building resilience, empathy, critical thinking, and the ability to express their ideas with clarity and purpose.
-
Our Story
Iconoclast Artists began through the partnership of a Salvadoran immigrant poet and a United Methodist pastor who believed young people deserve to be heard.
What started in a couple of Houston schools has grown into a decade-long commitment to youth literacy, creative writing, poetry, and mentorship across Houston and Galveston.
-
2016: The Beginning
Iconoclast Artists became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, bringing weekly creative writing and poetry instruction to its first partner schools in Houston. Our annual THEY SAY student poetry showcase and anthology also became a defining part of our program, celebrating young writers and giving them a platform to share their voices with a larger audience.
-
2017: A New Approach
We recognized that students were writing about significant hardships and needed support beyond the writing process. We revised our curriculum to incorporate trauma-informed teaching practices and consistent mentorship alongside our English Language Arts instruction.
-
2023: Galveston Expansion
We expanded our creative writing and mentorship programs into Galveston, building new partnerships with schools and community organizations to establish a strong presence in the region.
-
2024: Beyond The Classroom
We introduced S.W.A.P. (Students With Amazing Potential), extending our programming beyond the school day with after-school, weekend, and summer activities. In addition to creative writing and mentorship, S.W.A.P. students also explore fine arts, physical activities, and field trips.
-
2026: A Decade of Impact
We continued expanding into additional school districts across Houston and Galveston while celebrating our 10th anniversary. By 2026, we had served over 9,000 students, engaged thousands of families, and published the work of more than 450 young authors.
-
The 10th anniversary edition of THEY SAY collects a decade of student poetry, photos, and Iconoclast Artists history in one place. Open it to read more.
